What Types Of Abortion Can I Have?

There are currently two types of abortions available to South Australian residents - Early medication abortion and surgical abortion.

Early medication abortion can occur by using two medications to cause the pregnancy to miscarry.

A surgical abortion requires you to have pr-treatment medication to reduce the risk of bleeding and cervical damage during the surgical procedure. You will then return to have a operation.

Who Can Have An Abortion?

South Africans  residents up to 22 weeks pregnant can have an early medication or surgical abortion in South Africa.

How Early Or Late In The Pregnancy Can I Have An Abortion?

Depending on the type of abortion you have will depend on how early or late in your pregnancy you can be.

How Can I Work Out How Far Into The Pregnancy I Am?

Pregnancy weeks are counted from the first day of your last period, not from the date of conception. Most women have the abortion as early in the pregnancy as possible, however for many good reasons, this is not always possible.

Do I Need A Referral?

No referral is required to access abortion services in South Africa; however a GP, school counselor, community health service or Shine SA clinic may choose to provide a referral for you.

How Much Can I Expect To Pay?

Some services attract a cost, though this can be minimal if you have a Health Care card or Medicare card. Depending on your individual circumstances and which service you attend, charges may also vary. Please contact your service provider for the current charges that apply at the time you make your appointment.

What Are The waiting Times?

The waiting time for the first appointment is usually less than two weeks. However, if you suspect the pregnancy is over twelve weeks you should advise this when you contact the service. Your second appointment will be the most appropriate appointment depending on your decision.

How Long Will I Be At The Clinic?

You will be required to attend the clinic for two appointments.

The first appointment (the clinic consultation process) may take up to two hours.

The second appointment (the operation and recovery) on another day and may take up to two hours. If you are having both appointments (the operation and the clinic consultation) on the same day, expect to there for up to five hours. It is advisable to take a book or something else to occupy the time.

Attending for the second appointment for an early medication abortion will take up to 20 minutes.

Abortion Rights In South Africa

In South Africa, any woman of any age can get an abortion by simply requesting with no reasons given if

  1. She is less than 13 weeks pregnant

  2. If she is between 13 and 20 weeks pregnant, she can get the abortion if
    (a) her own physical or mental health is at stake,
    (b) the baby will have severe mental or physical abnormalities,
    (c) she is pregnant because of incest,
    (d) she is pregnant because of rape, or
    (e) she is of the personal opinion that her economic or social situation is sufficient reason for the termination of pregnancy.

  3. If she is more than 20 weeks pregnant, she can get the abortion only if her or the fetus' life is in danger or there are likely to be serious birth defects.

A woman under the age of 18 will be advised to consult her parents, but she can decide not to inform or consult them if she so chooses.

A woman who is married or in a life-partner relationship will be advised to consult her partner, but again she can decide not to inform or consult him/her.

An exception is that if the woman is severely mentally ill or has been unconscious for a long time, consent of a life-partner, parent or legal guardian is required.

Why Decide To Do Abortion

  • If the pregnancy is unplanned then it is within your choice to terminate.

  • If you are facing economic hardship (unemployed) then it is right to choose termination of a pregnancy.

  • If you got raped and therefore do not want to have a baby as result of this unfortunate issue then you are right to terminate.

  • If you will not be able to mentally and physically bring up a happy child then you are within your rights to termnate a pregnancy.

  • Adoption is not as easy as you think. It is better to terminate a pregnancy than hope to get the child adopted. You do not have control over the adoption process. Adoption is a state (government) issue and it is not in your control.

  • Termination of pregnancy is far better than abandoning a child in a drain or on the street after give full term birth. You will leave with the guilt all your life if you abandon a leaving child.

  • If your pregnancy is due to incest (sleeping with relatives) it is better to terminate pregnancy than have a child with your relative (father, brother or cousin).

  • It is always based to abort within three months of conceiving because then the child has not fully formed and therefore you are not getting rid off a human being but cells.

After Abortion

  1. You have to drink a lot of fluids including water to replenish your body.

  2. You have to make sure you have recovered fully so get a few days leave.

  3. Eat healthy food and take vitamins and get a lot of rest

  4. If you see something unusual go to the nearest hospital immediately

  5. Do not exercise for two weeks

  6. No swimming or tub baths for 2 weeks

  7. Don't lift heavy things, keep clear of hard work

  8. Do not insert anything in your vagina for up to a month no sex, no tampons, no douches.

  9. You can ovulate as soon as two weeks after an abortion, which means yes, you could get pregnant again within two weeks after an abortion!

  10. Do not have unprotected sex again as you will conceive again and go through this process all over again. Do not allow your partner to pressurize you into unprotected sex.

  11. For women who had an abortion for maternal health reasons, or for a poor prenatal diagnosis, consult your doctor about birth control and future pregnancies.
